> Book suggestions

With so much reading material available, it has been suggested that we offer a place where recommended Christian readings offered by YOU and others of our church and community, with commentary for reader guidance, can be shared.

If you would like to offer your own additions to this growing list, sent the book title, author's name and a very brief statement of why you found this book of interest, to:

Looking for a few interesting things to read? Here are a few selections you might want to check out.

Devotionals/Bible Reference:

·        Devotionals with Laura: Laura Ingalls Favorite Bible Selections. What they meant in her life, what they might mean in yours, by Dan L. White.

Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the famous novels based on her childhood in a pioneer family, is explored in this unique devotional. It shares with you the eighteen sections that she listed in a small Bible which was carried with her and Bible verses used in her farm life articles. The author includes excerpts from her writings and stories of her life (and those of her family and loved ones) to open up these Bible verses to us. Throughout the devotional we are shown how these verses touched Laura's life and you are able to reflect on how they still relate to our lives today.

This book is available on Amazon.com. If you like this you might also enjoy, The Little House Book Series. No matter your age these stories never lose their charm and "spirit"; they're great to read alone or share with the children in your family.

Spiritual Wisdom:

·        Why? Making Sense of God's Will, by Adam Hamilton

This is a small book (only about 99 pages) with a big "punch". This book has been used in church group discussions and attempts to tackle the question of, "Where is God when the Innocent suffer?" The book only has four chapters but you'll find it will be something you want to keep with you and refer to often.

This book is available on Amazon.com. If you like this you might also enjoy, Church: Why Bother? My Personal Pilgrimage, by Philip Yancey. I was once told by a wise Pastor that there is no perfect church and this book explores the author's own spiritual journey dealing with the ups and downs of church life.

A Classic Worth a Look:

·        The Pilgrim's Progress, by John Bunyan

Christian allegory at its best, described as a tale of "the soul's search for salvation".  This book is available at Barnes & Noble in a "classics" version that offers notes, discussion questions, and includes the second part of the story. The story will take you on a long soul searching journey and it will also take some time to read. With the second part and notes the book is over 300 pages in length. So be prepared to spend some time with Bunyan.

In upcoming blogs I hope to share more books you might enjoy. I love to read and any suggestions for books that have touched your life are welcomed. Please forward them to me and I will include them in the blog.

Many Blessings,

Marie Simone (simone711@comcast.net)
