Asbury Veteran: Lester Titus (deceased 2010)

Lester Titus was born in 1920 in Morgantown, W. Virginia. In 1941, at age 20 after marrying Myrtle, was classified 1A, was drafted into the Army and sent to Camp Lee, Virginia. He served from 1941 to 1945 and was only home once on a 3 day pass to Houston, Texas, where he was stationed. Lester was a Master Sergeant with 2 Battle Field Commissions, fought at Omaha Beach, France, Germany and in the Battle of the Bulge.
In 1945, when the war was over it took him one week in March to get home from Germany across a very rough North Atlantic Sea on a Liberty Ship (built in just 30 days). After being discharged at Camp Meade, MD, he began working for Cadillac Motor Car Division with a traveling territory including Tennessee, Ohio and Michigan. He traveled 85,000 miles/yr for 2 years leaving home Monday at 6am and returning home Friday between 6-9 pm every week. He was transferred to the Philadelphia District in 1964 where he traveled less and was home during the week.
Lester and his wife raised four sons, three of whom joined the military: one son is a Navy Chief in Jacksonville, Fla. He served in Viet Nam in Desert Storm and Desert Shield; his oldest son, a Sergeant in the Army Signal Corp also served in Viet Nam; another is an inactive Master Gunnery Sergeant in the Marine Corp. Lester and Myrtle were married 62 ½ years in 2004 (when Myrtle passed) and have 8 grandchildren. He now lives with his son in Cinnaminson.
